Steph’s been earning her own way since she was twelve and she was managing a burger van by the age of seventeen. After smelling of fried onions for a long time, she started putting her maths and IT skills into use whilst she was studying for her Philosophy degree. During her degree, Steph worked a range of temp jobs from trying to cajole guys called Steve to buy motherboards to automating energy bill analysis. She got her first “proper” IT job at confused.com as a Product Analyst for the Utilities product.2 Steph learnt about digital marketing and did unholy things with spreadsheets to get data. The thirst for data made her learn SQL, and then she jumped into the Business Intelligence (BI) team to build the end-to-end BI environment for the utilities switching product and build some basic data mining models for analysing insurance cross-sells. Steph moved onto Nemo Personal Finance, a second-mortgage company, to be their BI person. She grew the BI service and more people were hired. Steph mentored five people over the next couple of years in MySQL, database, design, reporting, and most importantly, effectively working with stakeholders. In her final year at Nemo, Steph discovered her passion for R and started resurrecting her maths skills to build models for predicting who would default on their loans and more in order to satisfy regulatory requirements for BASEL II’s IRB framework

Samuel Kamande

Kamande Wambui is currently the Head of Data Science at Ajua, the Integrated Customer Experience Platform. In this role, he provides data support for various products and develops new Data products to drive customer & consumer understanding through advanced analytics and machine learning. These products leverage on integration of structured but high velocity engagement data from consumers and other data to provide an integrated view of the customer, inside and outside the business, creating deep analytics and feeding into retention and acquisition strategies. He is also a Data Science curriculum consultant with Moringa School. Kamande previously worked at Nielsen as a Data Science Associate for East Africa. He supported the Commercial team to deliver Quality Retail Data to clients and delivered technical consultancy on Data Science related retail audit queries across FMCG categories. He was also part of the Data Science Global Emerging Leaders program. He holds a Masters’ degree in Statistics and a Masters’ degree in Computational Intelligence from The University of Nairobi. He has published papers on understanding the Consumption and viewing habits of the Kenyan consumer by using various algorithms and locally available data in peer reviewed journals and presented at various conferences in Africa. He is also NPS certified and facilitates NPS masterclasses in Africa.

Shelmith Kariuki

Shelmith Nyagathiri Kariuki is a Senior Data Analyst based in Kenya. She is also a Zindi Ambassador for Kenya, where she furthers the Zindi mission of building the data science ecosystem in Africa. She has previously worked as an assistant lecturer in various Kenyan universities, teaching units in Statistics and Actuarial Science. She holds a Bsc in Actuarial Science and Msc in Applied Statistics from JKUAT. Shelmith has extensive experience in data analysis using R and Python and is at the forefront of the AfricaR initiative, striving to achieve improved representation of Africans in the global R community by encouraging, inspiring, and empowering Africans of all genders.
